Frequently Asked Plumbing Questions

We've answered 7 of your most frequently asked plumbing questions so you know what to do and who to call if you ever have a plumbing problem in your home...

How can I tell if I have a leak?

If you think you might have a leak, the best thing to do is check your water meter and make a note of its current level. Give it a few hours, don't use any water and go and check the water meter again.

If the level has changed since you last checked, there's a good chance that you have a leak.

You can also keep an eye out for any signs of damp on your ceiling, or listing to drips coming from around the house.

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Smelly water comes as a result of a combination of hydrogen, sulphur and bacteria in the water.

Sulphur and bacteria are naturally present in your water, and will not make you ill, but hydrogen is not. Hydrogen typically appears when the magnesium anode rod in your water heater tank reacts with the sulhur and bacteria in the water, creating an egg-smelling like odor.

Fortunately, there are many ways that you can fix this!

How do I thaw a frozen pipe?

If your condensate pipe has frozen, grab a jug or a watering can of hot water and pour it along the length of the pipe, repeating the process until the pipe has thawed. Important... do NOT use boiling hot water as this will damage the pipe.

Why does my toilet keeps overflowing?

Toilets overflow mostly when there's a blockage, or where there's a fault in the tank float mechanism that regulates how much water flows through into the toilet.

If your toilet has overflown, or regularly overflows, call a plumber ASAP so they can properly diagnose the issue.

Should I fix a plumbing problem myself?

If you know what you are doing, and you have all of the necessary tools to fix the problem, then by all means go ahead and fix your plumbing problem.
